Abstract

The Sasak people of Lombok, Indonesia, have long maintained a rich cultural heritage, deeply intertwined with agricultural practices, craftsmanship, and spiritual traditions. This paper explores the intersection of Sasak indigenous education and the formal educational system, focusing on how traditional learning methods, especially those related to weaving, agriculture, and community-based practices, are being adapted in the face of modernity and globalization. The study examines the impact of tourism, modernization, and state-driven educational reforms on the Sasak educational framework, which traditionally emphasizes hands-on learning, environmental stewardship, and knowledge passed down through generations. While formal education has expanded across Lombok, the integration of Sasak knowledge into school curricula remains limited, risking the erosion of local traditions. This paper evaluates how Sasak communities navigate the pressures of modernization while striving to preserve their cultural identity. A key focus is the role of women in Sasak education, particularly in transmitting weaving techniques and agricultural skills to younger generations, which are crucial for both cultural preservation and economic independence. This research contributes to broader discussions on how indigenous educational practices can be revitalized and incorporated into contemporary educational policies. It advocates for a more inclusive educational model that balances modern academic curricula with traditional knowledge systems, ensuring that Sasak culture thrives amid the challenges of modernization.
