Community-Based Peatland Restoration for Fire Risk Reduction in Sumatra
Abstract
Peatland degradation has intensified the frequency and severity of wildfires in Sumatra, resulting in substantial ecological damage, greenhouse gas emissions, and public health impacts. Community-based peatland restoration has emerged as an important strategy for reducing fire risk while restoring ecosystem functions. This study examines the effectiveness of community participation in peatland restoration through hydrological rehabilitation, canal blocking, revegetation, and sustainable livelihood programs. Field observations, household surveys, and fire occurrence records were analyzed to evaluate restoration outcomes. The findings indicate that restored peatlands maintained higher groundwater levels, experienced lower fire incidence, and supported improved vegetation recovery compared with degraded sites. Active community engagement significantly enhanced restoration maintenance and encouraged the adoption of sustainable land management practices. Nevertheless, long-term restoration success remains dependent on institutional support, adequate funding, and continuous technical assistance. The study emphasizes that integrating ecological restoration with community empowerment provides a more sustainable approach to peatland management than purely technical interventions. Strengthening collaborative governance among government agencies, local communities, and conservation organizations is essential for improving peatland resilience and reducing future wildfire risks.
