Renewable Energy Integration for Sustainable Rural Development in Eastern Indonesia
Abstract
Limited access to reliable electricity remains a major constraint to socioeconomic development in many rural communities across Eastern Indonesia. Renewable energy technologies offer a sustainable alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based systems while supporting national energy transition goals. This study evaluates the feasibility of integrating solar, micro-hydropower, wind, and biomass energy systems into rural development programs through techno-economic assessment and stakeholder analysis. Data were collected from community surveys, energy demand assessments, and renewable resource evaluations across selected villages. The results demonstrate that hybrid renewable energy systems can substantially improve electricity reliability, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and stimulate local economic activities through enhanced agricultural processing, education, and healthcare services. However, challenges remain in financing, technical maintenance, institutional capacity, and long-term community participation. Capacity-building initiatives, supportive government policies, and innovative financing mechanisms were identified as essential drivers for successful implementation. The study concludes that decentralized renewable energy systems can significantly contribute to sustainable rural development while strengthening energy resilience in remote regions. These findings provide evidence for expanding community-based renewable energy initiatives as part of Indonesia's sustainable development agenda.
