Sustainable Groundwater Management under Rapid Urbanization in Java
Abstract
Rapid urbanization in Java has significantly increased groundwater extraction, resulting in declining water tables, land subsidence, and deteriorating groundwater quality. These challenges threaten water security and sustainable urban development. This study assesses groundwater sustainability by integrating hydrogeological data, groundwater monitoring records, land-use dynamics, and water demand projections within a spatial analytical framework. Groundwater availability and extraction patterns were evaluated using geographic information systems and statistical trend analysis to identify areas at high risk of resource depletion. The findings reveal that excessive groundwater abstraction in densely populated urban centers has accelerated aquifer degradation and increased vulnerability to seawater intrusion in coastal areas. Furthermore, urban expansion has reduced natural groundwater recharge through extensive land surface impermeabilization. Sustainable groundwater management requires coordinated implementation of artificial recharge systems, stricter groundwater abstraction regulations, expanded rainwater harvesting, and integrated urban water management strategies. Strengthening institutional coordination and promoting public awareness are also critical for ensuring long-term groundwater sustainability. The study provides practical recommendations for policymakers seeking to balance urban development with the conservation of strategic groundwater resources under increasing environmental pressures.
