Circular Economy Practices in Indonesia's Palm Oil Waste Management

Abstract

Indonesia's palm oil industry generates substantial quantities of agricultural residues that present both environmental challenges and economic opportunities. Applying circular economy principles offers an effective strategy for transforming palm oil waste into valuable resources while reducing environmental impacts. This study evaluates the implementation of circular economy practices through the utilization of empty fruit bunches, palm kernel shells, palm oil mill effluent, and other biomass residues for renewable energy generation, compost production, and bio-based materials. Data were collected through industry surveys, case studies, and life cycle assessment to evaluate environmental and economic performance. Results indicate that integrated waste utilization significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, minimizes landfill disposal, and increases resource efficiency while generating additional income for producers. Nevertheless, implementation remains constrained by technological limitations, investment costs, and inconsistent regulatory support. Strengthening policy incentives, improving technological innovation, and encouraging industrial collaboration are essential to accelerate circular economy adoption across the palm oil sector. The study highlights the potential of sustainable waste management to simultaneously improve environmental performance and enhance the competitiveness of Indonesia's palm oil industry.
